Don't lift a door with a broken spring. Without its springs, a double door can weigh as much as a fridge.
Don't pull the red emergency release on an open door if a spring or cable is broken. The door can come crashing down.
Don't touch the springs, cables or bottom brackets. They hold enough tension to cause serious injury.
Don't keep pressing the remote. The opener isn't built to lift a dead weight, and you can burn out the motor.

Torsion springs
The coiled springs on the bar above your door do the heavy lifting, not the opener. They're wound tight enough to balance the door's whole weight, which is why a door with a broken spring suddenly feels like it weighs a tonne.
Lifespan
Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles: roughly 7 years at four uses a day. High-cycle springs last up to twice as long.
Warning signs
A loud bang, a gap in the coil, a door that's heavy or stops a few inches up, an opener that strains.
Steel lift cables wind onto drums at each end of the spring bar and run down to the bottom corners of the door. When the springs turn, the cables are what actually pull the door up.
Lifespan
Usually about as long as the springs. We check them on every spring job and often replace them together.
Warning signs
Frayed or rusty strands, a cable hanging loose, a door that sits crooked or lifts unevenly.
The motor on your ceiling guides the door and tells it when to stop, but the springs carry the weight. An opener straining to lift the door is usually a spring problem in disguise.
Lifespan
Around 10 to 15 years. Newer models add quiet belt drives, battery backup, Wi-Fi and automatic locks.
Warning signs
Humming without moving, clicking, stopping and reversing, remotes that only work up close.

That it's plugged in, the remote battery, and whether the emergency release has been pulled.
Steel tracks on each side guide the rollers up and back along the ceiling. They have to stay straight, clean and parallel for the door to run smoothly.
Lifespan
Decades, unless a car hits them or they get knocked out of line.
Warning signs
Bent sections, gaps between the rollers and the track, a door that binds, jerks or jumps off track.

Wipe out dirt with a damp cloth. Never hammer a track back into place while the door is under spring tension.
Two small "photo eyes" about 15 cm (6 inches) off the floor send an invisible beam across the opening. Break the beam and the door reverses. That's what keeps kids, pets and cars safe.
Lifespan
They often outlast the opener, but they get knocked, dirty and out of line.
Warning signs
The door closes a few inches and goes back up, a blinking light on the opener or a sensor, a door that only closes while you hold the button.
You can check
Wipe both lenses, clear anything in the beam, and line them up until both lights are solid.
The rubber along the bottom and the strips around the frame keep out rain, snow, drafts and mice. In a Canadian winter, they also decide whether your door freezes to the floor.
Lifespan
A few years. Sun and cold make the rubber crack and shrink.

Daylight under the door, puddles, drafts, leaves blowing in, a door frozen to the ground.

Springs are the part that breaks most often, and every spring breaks eventually: each one is rated for a
set number of open-and-close cycles. A standard torsion spring is good for about 10,000 cycles. If your
door goes up and down four times a day, that's roughly seven years.
Most homes have torsion springs on a bar above the door. Older and some single doors use extension
springs that stretch along the tracks overhead. Either type is under enough tension to cause serious
injury, so spring replacement is always a job for a trained technician with proper winding bars.

What was the loud bang I heard from my garage?
Most likely a broken torsion spring. Springs hold a huge amount of tension and wear out after a set number of cycles, and changes in temperature speed that up. Don't try to open the door or repair the spring yourself: the spring is what lifts the heavy door, and it's very dangerous without training. Leave the door closed and call us.
Is it safe to use my garage door with a broken spring?
No. Without a working spring, the door's full weight hangs on the opener and the cables. The opener can burn out, a cable can snap, and the door can fall. Keep the door closed, unplug the opener, and don't pull the emergency release while the door is open.
How long do garage door springs last?
A standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles (one cycle is one open and close). At four cycles a day, that's roughly seven years. High-cycle springs are rated for 15,000 to 20,000 cycles and last up to twice as long. Try the spring life calculator above to check yours.
Why is my garage door only opening halfway?
It's usually the opener: its travel limits may need adjusting, or it may be reaching the end of its life. A weak or broken spring can cause the same thing, because the opener stops when the door feels too heavy. A technician can tell which it is and whether the opener is worth repairing or replacing.
Why is my garage door hanging on an angle?
A door that's tilted to one side almost always has a snapped or slipped lift cable. The cables raise and lower the door, so when one fails, that side can't lift. Stop using the door and call us: it's under spring tension and can fall.
Why won't my garage door close, or why does it go back up?
This is one of the most common calls we get, and it's usually the safety sensors (also called photo eyes). Check that both lenses are clean and pointing straight at each other, and that nothing is blocking the beam. You should see two solid lights. If they still blink, the sensors or their wiring need repair.
Why does my opener run but the door doesn't move?
First make sure the door isn't in manual mode: look up at the trolley on the opener rail and see whether it's disconnected. If it is, reconnect it and try again. If the problem continues, it could be a stripped gear, a motor issue or a broken spring. In some cases, replacing the opener costs less in the long run than repairing it, and we'll tell you honestly which makes sense.
Why is my garage door so noisy?
Noise is usually a sign that it's time for maintenance. Lubricate the hinges, metal rollers and springs with garage door lubricant (available at Home Depot or Canadian Tire), skipping any nylon rollers, to reduce the friction that wears the whole system. If it's still loud, worn rollers or loose hardware are the likely cause, and we can fix that in one visit.
My garage door is frozen to the ground. What should I do?
Don't force it with the opener. Loosen the ice along the bottom of the door with a plastic scraper until it lets go. Keep salt and ice melt off the door itself, since they cause rust. To stop it happening again, we can replace the bottom seal with a thick rubber designed not to freeze. Those seals need a sturdy door, so on an older, thin door, a new insulated door may be the better fix.
My remote or keypad stopped working. What should I do?
Change the batteries first. If that doesn't work, the remote or keypad may need reprogramming: your opener's manual or a quick video for your brand will show you how. Or call us and we'll reprogram or replace them for you.
I'm locked out of my garage. What should I do?
Call us and we'll get you in safely. If your garage door is the only way into the garage, it's worth adding a lock or a keypad. Our technicians can walk you through your security options while they're there.
I drove into my garage door and it's dented. Should I repair it or replace it?
